LSU AgCenter Biotechnology Laboratory (ABL) promotes long-term economic and business opportunities that will benefit Louisiana through the use of modern biotechnology research and establishing biotechnology as one of the future leading industries in our state. ABL has formal relationships with a variety of organizations uniting efforts to achieve this goal. Success of biotechnological industry depends on success in several areas:
  • Identify the most promising and beneficial areas of biotechnology that will benefit Louisiana economy including new areas for agriculture and pharmacology
  • Conduct research targeting development of new products in identified areas
  • Evaluate industrial feasibility and economical efficiency of potential new products
  • Help to start a new biotech business commercializing developed products and ensure success

ABL, a laboratory uniting specialists in different areas, manages this multistage process by establishing economic partnerships among academic, business and state agencies. The ABL is comprised of members who are scientists from the LSU AgCenter Departments of Agronomy, Biological Sciences, Plant Pathology, Veterinary Science and the Pennington Biomedical Research Center with recognized expertise covering a wide area in biological and agricultural sciences. Using the intellectual foundation and potential of the ABL, we assist science, business, and government in Louisiana in combining and moving biotechnology from the research lab to commercial products by developing beneficial partnerships among appropriate parties. We serve to:

  • Increase biotech agricultural research with long-term goals to enhance prosperity and well-being of Louisiana
  • Boost the interest of state legislators and business community in biotechnology, promote the establishment of new biotech businesses in Louisiana by appropriate contacts and networking of science, business and government leaders
  • Help to identify innovative biotechnology projects that have the potential to create new commercial products targeting agricultural and medical applications
  • Help create tomorrow’s commercial biotechnology products
  • Evaluate start-up grants for new biotech businesses that would benefit most from such investments and contribute to the foundation of a technology-based economy in Louisiana
  • Strengthen the biotechnology capabilities of Louisiana’s universities and research institutes
